In a book that is so dark for the majority of its (very numerous) pages, I found the ending to be incredibly hopeful and joyous. Although the romantic in me hoped
that Dantes and Mercedes would end up together
. Surprisingly, I found very little of this book to be superfluous; indeed, it was very satisfying to watch the Count weave his complicated web of revenge. I found myself rooting for unlikely heroes, and marveling at the tangled mess where these characters lives had intertwined. I was also utterly surprised and delighted to see two queer characters who find a happy end in this book! Altogether worth the read, even though it was a long time coming for me.

Imma be honest: I didn't know much of what was going on and really couldn't keep most of the names straight. I only knew a vague outline of the plot after watching the movie adaption years ago and, since they take roughly the same amount of time, I'd pick the movie.

The ending was not what I expected but I liked it. My main issue with the length was
Vampa’s backstory (don’t think this a spoiler but alas)
, the rest was fair length. I’d say it’s a page-turner for  the majority of the book.

a wonderful and also immensely difficult book to read. the story-telling by Dumas is brilliant, and i couldn't help but become absolutely sucked in when the story really got going. i do not really know what compelled me to actually finish this book (i started it around 2-3 years ago), but even throughout the many breaks i took i still wanted to come back to it - and it was worth it. most of the book is build-up, and then you see people's true characters really pop out towards the end. this book needs patience and yet a lust for adventure (and included a LOT of philosophical topics when you really look for them: is revenge good? what are our motives for treating others? what causes the human brain to break? etc.). plus, if you have a general love for the extravagant and period-typical style of writing, this is right up your alley.

the story of revenge is always a perfect plot, and the twists and turns will have you trying your hardest not to look ahead.
