“I emerged from that tomb by the grace of God and I owe it to God to take my revenge. He has sent me for that purpose. Here I am.”

Ngl, I was intimidated by its length (like omg 1246 is a lot), so I took my sweet time with the fist 300-400 pages, and it was worth it, I believe I enjoyed it more this way bc I could process what happened in some chapters. I mean all that happens at the Château d’if broke me.
The story telling is beautiful, is so well written and the metaphors aren’t tedious at all for a classic. Also I ADORED all the religious undertones and the idea of God, I mean, I was raised in a religious mexican household, so that hit me hard. And I honestly think that, that was an influential factor in why I enjoyed it so much.
With the general plot, some parts are slower than others or some are confusing but at some point you get that it was just the build up for something jaw dropping.Like, GOD is fascinating and so satisfying to read how everything falls perfectly into place and how all the characters (who are super well written and interesting) get intertwined.
The ending was almost satisfying for me, bc wanted someone to suffer a lot more but, I get the repent idea, I get it, “Hot girls get it”- Dumas, probably.

Edmond is just THAT guy, like, he’s so charismatic and charming and is incredible how you root for him all the way, his character development is super satisfying (also I don’t know why, but I pictured him as Tamino and that made me fall for him even harder oop.) I get that Dumas made us, as readers, question if at some point what was happening was morally correct and when does Edmond’s need for revenge starts to get out of hand.

Overall, I can say that is one of the best books I’ve ever read, is a perfect classic and I can’t recommend it enough.

The Count of Monte Cristo feels like a modern action movie franchise full of adventure, mystery, jail breaks,  hidden treasure, pirates, exotic locations, false identities, secret Masonic signs, Romeo and Juliet romance, historical intrigue, vampires, hashish and opium, poisoning, dueling, murder, surprising courtroom drama, grateful reward, and ruthless revenge, along with the societal evils of the period including slavery, imperialism, and misogyny.  Unfortunately despite its cinematic scope, both the novel and action films fall outside my preferences.
