I remember reading this in my sophomore English class and having a lot of discussions about vengeance (I am firmly in the side of vengeance, especially for this book). My teacher did not teach it super well but apparently she was going through a divorce, so I hope that means she is teaching it better now.

Amazing writing, lovable character. The book is gripping despite having 800 pages of French aristocrats being catty. Altogether very fun book but sort of lacking in moral substance.

The count is wronged and the proceeds to spend 800 pages getting revenge with no moral qualms about his own actions. And then he gets away with everything destroys his enemies and gets a baddie on top of it all. I wish it had been more of a fair fight.
