3.5 stars
I feel very conflicted about this book. The first third of it was AMAZING!!! Then it started to lose speed and get really far too convoluted. Maybe audio isn't the way to go for this one - I wished I had a print copy at times to check who was who and I kept getting characters confused because they all have similar names and titles and pseudonyms! Gah! So I'll give this 3.5 stars because it's a classic and I'm sure at least part of it was my own fault, but really the last two-thirds just got kinda boring.

Loved it

There are Black and brown people in this novel - very intentionally written from the time period in which the author lived as a mixed race person. Would have loved to see what Alexandre Dumas would write in the 2000s. But I’m here for the historical and cultural context anyway.

If you are white and reading this for the first time without knowing the history of Alexandre Dumas the general and father of the author - you will miss out on a metric buttload of nuance and detail.

my favorite book for now!!!! gonna reread this

Read only half of it (which is like 700 pages) but stopped after the story started progressing slowly and the morals of the main character became questionable

I read this book for the first time in 10th grade and loved it. I reread it in 2007 and found it just as enjoyable. The good thing about waiting 10 years to read it again was that I couldn't remember all of the details so it was just as good as the first time.

Wow! I read the abridged of this in high school but I certainly did not appreciate it as much as I do after reading the unabridged version. There were times when I kept thinking that it was dragging and that there were so many useless details only to realize much later that EVERYTHING was important to the later plot development. This book is the definition of a slow burning plot. The growth of Edmond was astonishing. I mean, we all expect the change from the nice guy to the avenging angel but his development continues even beyond that.

Overall, I am so glad I gave this another shot. It was possibly the most emotionally exhausting and thrilling story I have ever read.
