It was quite similar to the movie, I personally thought. But my favorite scene is probably the scene with the girl who wants a squirrel, I've always thought that scene was funny (I think so anyway).

Maybe the second classic I've read since I started reading. The first was a book we read in Swedish 2, called The Rescuers written by J.D. Salinger (the original language is probably in English).

I'm pretty proud of myself for having read Charlie and the Factory because it's a movie most people have watched at some point in their lives, but I would recommend the book too because it's quite similar to the movie, in my opinion.

Read Patrick Rothfuss' review. It's right on.

I dragged my copy of this book out (yes, the 1964 edition, acquired new!) after seeing the modern stage musical (really really mediocre) and rewatching the two movie versions (pretty mediocre). I'd like to see the Gene Wilder script with the Johnny Depp sets, but the Gene Wilder film is cheesy and the Johnny Depp one is just weird--lots of added backstory. The book, of course, is the gem of the whole lot. And it holds up quite well more than 50 years after it was written.

Reading this to the kid I work with- he liked it

“i would give it five stars cause i liked it so much at the end and i would say actually another one, one star, i’ve actually not read it in a long time before you read it to me”

Cute book, I was surprised by how almost word for word the movie follows it. Some of the characters physical description are different & the storyline w the guy trying to get the factory’s secret & Wonka getting mad at Charlie are not included, but otherwise pretty much exactly the same!
