book #2 for the stay home reading rush 2020!

read a book in the same room the whole time

This book was about five children who were trying to find golden tickets to go in Mr. Wonka's chocolate factory. Their names were Augustus Gloop, Veruca Salt, Violet Beauregard, Mike Teevee, and Charlie Bucket, our hero. Read this book to see what our hero does and this amazing chocolate factory.

Loved it. I know it’s from a different time but I just did not like the way it spoke about fat people! It was something I changed while reading aloud. I’m also wondering why we don’t have a follow up movie of Charlie running the factory and maybe doing his own lottery to pass it on again as a tradition. Weird choice to keep doing this book over and over again, Hollywood! Boring! The book sets it up perfectly.

movie was better and I just never liked Roald Dahl lmfao

Loved revisiting this book, reading it to my daughter. Such fun.

A nostalgic read for me. I loved growing up watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and then the film Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I will say that this book is still whimsically fantastic. There’s adventure and fun. These are the big takeaways.

But when I dive deeper, this classic children’s story really dissects modern parenting and the types of children that are produced when things like television are introduced to a child’s world early on. As a father, it makes sense that Dahl would write about parenting. As a parent myself, now, I can see what he was commenting on and that they weren’t just silly characters. That doesn’t mean I necessarily agree with him.

Listening to the audiobook was also a bit of a challenge for me. This particular narrator’s choices for some of the character’s voices took me out of the scene. I also didn’t like the sound effects like camera’s clicking. I tried not to let that influence my rating, but thought it should still be mentioned.
