I feel enjoyed is the wrong word to use for a book like this, but I did enjoy reading it. Charlie's story was so deeply relatable and I devoured every second of it. At times yes, it was triggering and upsetting, I had to put the book down and give myself space to process before I kept reading - but it was so understanding and healing to read. As someone who spent nearly 4 years clean before they relapsed, her journey through recovery puts exactly how I felt/feel into words. Reading a book about something I've been through, its as I said, healing.
I felt the clunky sort of writing style at the start, in my opinion, reflects her mental state. As we watch her grow and heal, the chapters become more regular and flow. When she's struggling, the chapters are short and lots of metaphors are used - I'm interpretation that as her mind is shattered and all over the place, like the writing style. I don't know if that was the intention, but it really fits with the story.
First of all,
Secondly, Riley was such an interesting character.
This gorgeous book captivated the recovery process so perfectly, and I'm glad
