Started off as rather weak, but got more interesting over time. I wasn't fond of the paranormal romance (PNR) elements, such as the extremely-super hot billionaire, who is also ridiculously powerful. However, this annoyance was mitigated by the personalities involved, overall making for a reasonable story.
Besides the romantic element, the story was all right, in that it was obviously merely an opener for a larger story arch, no doubt leading into a series. The world-building was more interesting, but not remotely as fascinating as in the case of the author's Kate Daniels series, for instance.
Overall, a decent book in the urban fantasy genre and I'm looking forward to more books in the series.

Since discovering Kate Daniels Series last year, my obsession with Ilona Andrews grows with each new book I read from them. This book is the best of UF; interesting magic, kickass heroine, brooding anti-hero, excellent banter with underlying chemistry, and a lovable supporting cast. This book only scratches the surface of the world and characters involved, and I can't wait to read more.
Nevada is the badass, snarky, heroine I knew she would be, and she makes me miss Kate a little less. I especially enjoyed the setting of Houston (my hometown), and all the little ways they incorporate the city into the storyline. I'm thrilled of not having to wait to read book 2 because the series is addicting. If you haven't gotten on the Andrews Train, get a ticket!

"Two bit magician?"
"Men like you enjoy being flattered."

Very entertaining book. Not what I'd usually look for in a romance but I loved it mostly as a detective/urban fantasy story. It was really funny at times too. Well paced for an action packed story with world building. Now that we know rogan might be somewhat redeemable (maybe lol) I hope there's better romance in the next one. If not, that's fine I guess. I absolutely loved the wonderfully smart and talented heroine Nevada - I'll be reading more of their books for more like her.
Didn't like the narrator of the audiobook 🙄
