It really bothers me how the heroine always calls the hero by his full name -- Mad Rogan. "Mad Rogan said this." "Mad Rogan did that."

Maybe my liking of the story was affected by the narrator, as I listened to this one. I didn't care for her rendition at all and her lisp bothered me. Never got used to it.

This one was just ok for me.

The cover is stupid, deceiving, and embarrassing to have out in public. But this is one of the best books I read this year… Endlessly entertaining and stupid funny! The writing was phenomenal. I would have never read it if it didn’t come highly recommended but I couldn’t put it down.

People love this book but I went in looking for a slow-burn romance that - in the end - didn't deliver on the romance for me. My issue could therefore be my own expectations. This is the first in a series, but I assumed it would feel like we get some satisfying conclusion with the romance aspect of the novel. The full circle aspect is more the action-part of the story. I only read it because it's on the Heaving Bosoms podcast (which I am trying to follow to expand the types of romance I read) but don't know if I care enough to continue with this series.

DID NOT FINISH

DNF @ 26%

I’ve learned to quickly DNF romance books if I’m not completely feeling them. I think I could like this, but it reminds me too much of True Blood so I just wish it was vampires instead.

This was my first Ilona Andrews novel as I have been wanting to get into their work ever since I have seen Mara (from bookslikewhoa) rave about them. I love that the book has magic in the real world and it’s not hidden, everyone just knows about it and accepts it, something I don’t think I’ve seen much in fantasy. My only real gripe is with the romance, I feel like it was developed decently enough but I didn’t need to hear how muscular Mad Rogan was every 3 pages. I will continue this series and at least read the first 3 books before I probably read any of their other series.
