An excellent new world and power couple
Fans of Kate Daniels will fall in love with Ilona Andrews' new series Hidden Legacy. Familiar enough to be comforting (a strong willed woman, a powerful beast of a man) but different enough to be unique (Houston vs Atlanta, Nevada's strength isn't in combat like Kate but her will and devotion to family, Magic being 100% a part of the world integrated with Tech not divorced from, and more). This reads like more of Super Hero story (a la Xmen) than a Fantasy, but without the pulp dialogue. Rich and ethnically diverse characters with passion dominate.
Can't wait for the next

Honestly? This was a super fun read.
I was pretty lost for about 30% of the book but by the half way mark I didn’t want to put it down. The writing was almost cinematic? I felt like I could see every seen and the magic system felt more akin to superhero’s than typical magical systems in fantasy books.
I loved Nevada and her family and their dynamics felt very realistic despite the high stakes events going on around them. Nevada’s internal monologue was hilarious and I enjoyed watching her problem solve and debate her choices in real time.
Burn for Me introduces a legitimately morally gray MMC and although he’s a bit dark, he doesn’t fit neatly within the typical broody anti hero archetype. He and Nevada serve as foils to one another and we really get to explore morality and ethics through their differences. Nevada’s complete “read” of him at the end was so deserved and he needed to hear it. I’m excited to see where he as a character and their budding romance goes in the next book.
I was surprised to see how highly rated this series is but now I see why.

I think a few Booktok mutuals will side eye me for this review.
A badass private investigator, a suicide mission, a wanted rich runaway, a crazily overpowered, hot guy who our heroine has read fanfiction about in an urban fantasy setting. Sounds fantastic.
The start had sooo much potential. I could tell the love and care and fear Nevada had for her family. She just wants to keep her family business afloat and make sure they’re all happy.
The side characters were fun and amusing. There was snark, back and forth that I enjoyed….
And then we got introduced to the kind of love interest. After the 40% mark, my enjoyment of this book steadily decreased. Maybe it is because his name was Mad Rogan. Throughout.
I did not find him sexy. He was heavy-handed and mean. Possessive and obsessive. Muscles and constantly going shirtless do not automatically equal sexiness.
He’s big. He’s powerful. He’s hot. I GET IT.
This isn’t a dark romance but there is non-consensual stuff and kidnapping and torture and psychopathy.
“Fine,” he said. “You had no idea it could be this good. Nobody in your past was ever that good and you know that nobody in your future will ever be this good. You’ve had a taste and you want more. You want sex. Dirty, naked hot sex. It’s floating through your head as we speak. You think you can imagine what it would be like. Trust me, you have no idea. I haven’t even started. So run from it, think it over, pretend it didn’t happen, it doesn’t matter. I’ll allow it for now. The more you fight, the more irresistible it will become, until one day I’ll motion with my hand and you’ll come running.”

This had a lot of potential, but there were too many icky and nope things for me. If there was no Mad Rogan, this would have been good.
I knew I would like this book, 'cause you know, it's Ilona Andrews. I did not expect to like it as much as the Kate Daniels series, but they have pulled me in yet again and gotten me to love their world and characters. They do need to try and stay away form those worn out tropes like the family owned and run private detective agency run out of an old warehouse, with the ex-military sniper mother, the kick ass grandma who fixes tanks--doesn't everyone have one of those?--, you know, overused stuff like that. Can't wait for the next book!!!

I liked Burn For Me! Nevada and Rogan are interesting, and I really liked the magic system. Their world is one I wanted to stay in just a little bit longer. It's also one I wanted to know more about.
This book felt pretty light on the romance- there was a point where I thought Adam was going to completely change and end up with Nevada, but I realized that wouldn't work, because things were set up so she'd end up with Rogan. It felt more about trying to find Adam, then their attraction to each other, but maybe I was so interested in everything else that was going on that the romance went over my head.
Honestly, I think it's because of the cover. I haven't read a lot of paranormal romance/urban fantasy but based on what I have read, I think I went in with the expectation there would be a lot more romance. Part of me is hoping we'll see more of that in the books to come, but even if it doesn't happen, I still want to keep reading to see what happens to Nevada, her family and Rogan.
The magic is really cool, and it's interesting how magic can get more powerful, or less powerful, depending on the generation, and how powerful their parents are. The dynasties that each family creates based on their powers was something I wanted to know more about.
Especially because Nevada gets dragged into this world she doesn't want anything to do with. She's dedicated to her family, and would do anything to protect them, even though it won't end well for her. I wanted to see more of her family, because they seem like a close-knit group who work really well together. She also seems to be the main provider for them, and I'm glad she survived, if only to take care of them. Her family is colorful and I loved that. I wanted more with them because of it.
I like that Nevada is practical. She has to be, but she is this practical, smart person in a world very different than the one she is used to. She clearly didn't want to work with Rogan but did because she had to in order to protect her family and the family business her father worked hard to build up.
Nevada had some great one-liners as well, and there's an interesting dynamic between her and Rogan. I am curious to see if this series will follow them, or if other characters will be the focus of the other books. I'll have to read to find out but their story feels far from over.
My Rating: 3 stars. I liked Burn For Me, especially Nevada's family, and the world they live in. I do want to see what happens next.
