Re-read 1/16/20: I didn't love this quite as much on re-read as I did the first time I read it, but it was still really good and I'm excited to finally dive further into the series!

Original read 12/11/18: I LOVED THIS SO MUCH OMG. The only reason I'm not giving it a full 5 star is bc the sex scenes were fade to black but everything else about this was PERFECT. *kisses my gay ass fingertips*

This is the first comic I read from Stjepan and I really enjoyed it. I found him thanks to his wife Linda Ŝejic who is also an illustrator and her works Blood Stein and Punderworld are some of my favorites. Although the topic of this book was a lot different from hers, the lightness and humor of it was very much the same. I like how similar they are in their art and writing, since I’ve read all of Linda’s books and really want to continue reading something similar.

Can’t say I’ve ever read anything like this before since erotica isn’t really my thing, but I am pleasantly surprised by it. It isn’t just filled to the brim with mindless illustrations of two women fucking, but a story about two well written women finding each other through their shared interests. It’s a pretty sweet story. I love how Stjepan capture the characters anxiety and nervousness at meeting each other and trying something new through the volume, it really helps to bring them to life. How he hasn’t just created two shells of people to use as props for this erotica. And the way he portray BDSM as something that needs much consent is amazing. It’s sad that my standard is so low that I get happy by someone writing non exploitative relationships, but unfortunately I’ve read my fair share of horrible romances.
Anyhow, I’ll definitely continue this series and check out his other works as well.

Warning: Not at all safe for work! Depictions of sex, bondage.

Sunstone is a wonderful comic. Given the subject matter, you'd think it would be just sexy - two beautiful women who meet to engage in a BDSM relationship. And I won't lie, there is plenty of sexy scenes and really beautiful artwork... but the story goes a lot deeper than that. The characters are playful, and well rounded. It didn't feel at all like a graphic novel written to titillate - it felt like a love story, and a coming-into-your-own story.

I was a little worried when I saw that this book was written by a man, that it might be somehow stereotypical or provocative for no reason. It really isn't. These characters and the lifestyle they choose, and how they feel about each other - it felt really good. I was happy for them, and honestly, with how beautifully the whole BDSM lifestyle was described, I felt that they fit like puzzle pieces to each other. I'll definitely keep reading further.

⭐ 5 stars

This was very good.

Many people recommended this to me, and I was very curious. I'm not usually a huge fan of graphic novels, but this one is beautiful.

The design and writing are well done. I particularly enjoyed the funny moments where the author anticipates what we might be thinking as we read. It’s such a clever touch.

It's also very easy to read. I barely noticed the hundred pages flying by. I can't wait to dive into the rest of the series and follow more of Lisa and Ally's story.

Don't hesitate to go read this classic novel. If you enjoy BDSM with a sweet side, you won’t regret it.

I'll be frank: I only picked this up cause of the artist.

Stjepan Sejic is one of my go-to artists for comics, so when I heard rumblings that he'd penned and drawn a story that wasn't superheroes or high fantasy (both of which I enjoy, mind you), I was intrigued. But... erotic rom-com with a BDSM backdrop? It's the sort of thing I didn't know I needed until I held it in my hands.

Ally and Lisa meet in this volume, introducing themselves in-person after months of chatting online. They're adorable in their interactions with each other, even at this early state, and while the rom-com angle might not be revolutionary, the fact that it's a female-female pairing with a heavy dose od BDSM makes it feel that way.

I'm not up on BDSM, so I'll let others speak on how Sunstone depicts it. From what I can tell, though, this seems to be far better than a certain inexplicably popular series of novels revolving around the color gray (or is it grey?).

The art is as beautiful as I would expect from Sejic, and he's surprised me with his writing chops. Like I said, nothing revolutionary here, but Sejic displays a fair bit of wit and he manages to get us invested in Ally and Lisa from the get-go.

All in all, this is a strong introduction to what I hope is a great series.

This is a beautifully written and illustrated book. I became interested in Stjepan Šejić after starting his Harleen limited series, and this book did not disappoint. It is fun book to read, lighthearted in that the only real struggle is that of the characters trying to figure out what they're doing with each other and where it may be leading. I had a friend jokingly accuse me of reading porn, and some might consider this light porn, but I feel like it's much more than that (not that there is anything inherently wrong with porn aside from the rampant sexism and misogyny so often found therein). The characters really do have life and quality of their own, and their journey into the world of bdsm together is totally sweet.

Erotic romantic comic...and it worked. Kudos.
