Well-written and engaging memoir of a boy growing up in New England with an alcoholic father, but never beyond the reach of the grace of God. I listened to the audiobook version, which has the added bonus of being read by the author. It is not only well-written, but well read. Cron writes with a charming self-deprecating wit, but is also able to tackle weighty matters of faith and friendship without being trite. Nor does he shy away from describing the horrors and heartbreaks of living with his alcoholic father, or in a chilling scene falling prey to the bullying of older boys. His portrayals of the characters in his memoir (and life) are vivid and memorable. I love the anchored rope metaphor that runs through the story.

Competent prose, a moving story, at times a bit thin on connective tissue.
