i read this on a really long flight, so boredom might have been a factor, but this book mostly just glided along until the end. i like expository detail and i’m not picky about needing the plot to be purposeful at all times, so i didn’t mind that the book sort of drifted towards the end. the pov was a little tricky to wrap your head around, but i stayed interested enough to finish it. i will say, the last page made me go :O and i did not see it coming at all so for that i think it’s worth the read.

Wilson’s prose is precise, perceptive and propulsive. Protagonist is an unreliable narrator, but he’s written in a way that forces readers to consider how reliable our own stories are, especially the stories we tell about ourselves… how much self-deception is going on in our heads? How much self-aggrandizing are we guilty of? Is it even possible to ever know?

I am not sure I enjoyed much about this reading experience, but it is definitely interesting. If I’d known going in that it was a book about men behaving badly and entitled and endlessly looking to justify their actions, I definitely would have said no thank you. And the book is just that, but I was asking the entire way, what are we doing here? Why is the author telling this story in this way? Do we need books about crappy men as central figures? It definitely challenged me in that way, and I am happy to read books that make me think and question my assumptions and preferences. And, importantly, the book never asked me to feel any sympathy for these jerks.

I enjoyed most of this book, but I found the ending to be extremely underwhelming. It was guessable (which I didn’t particularly mind) but some of the ominous foreshadowing doesn’t help with the actual end. It’s too bad. Nonetheless I was entertained and interested throughout.

I was very surprised by this one! Two men talking for the whole book?? Not my thing, generally. But the questions and themes brought up here were really compelling and fun to think about. What is art, what do we owe in being alive, what would you do if given a second chance? The entirety of the story being told via a conversation was kind of clunky but then brings in a whole new layer of complexity to the story; what are the stories we tell ourselves and what are the stories we tell others. The “twist” was a bit cliche but I still enjoyed how it was written. It was a short punch of a read (that probably could have been even shorter) that is perfect to sit down with in one sitting.
