I debated with myself on how I was going to rate this book. It truly was an amazing sequel. Being able to read Bree’s character development, how she learned (and is still learning) to become fully realised on her own was very emotional. While I read Legendborn in one sitting, reading Bloodmarked took time, absorbing what happened and trying not to cry.

I like that Bree got to learn more about her own magic, how it works. I also love how Tracy emphasised the strength of community and togetherness. Through Bree’s ancestors, the spirits and connections between black people (especially black women) and Bree’s relationships with her friends.

However, I didn’t give this book 5 stars. There were times where it was too much. Where it felt like a load of new information was being thrown at you just to move on to the next, and then the next without being able to process what happened within the context of the story. And, though there were few fight scenes, that felt a little repetitive.

That doesn’t take away from how amazing this book was. I cannot wait for the final book of the series, but at the same time I don’t want it to end. I also want to see more of Alice and William. Those two (along with Bree, of course) are definitely my favourite characters in the series
