I decided to read the original story to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Brokeback Mountain (the movie). And yes, I do feel old while typing this.
Proulx’s writing is sparse, but very captivating. The story keeps moving forward and intensifies every page. So much is said, with so little words. The plot is as amazing as I know from the movie.
And there lies the issue, because knowing the movie did ruin the experience for me. I’m really impressed by how the movie captured the essence of this short story, but it used almost every little detail from the book to get there. Everything is literally on these pages: iconic dialogues, scene descriptions, deep character work, emotions, …
The story of Ennis and Jack will always have a place in my mind and heart, but the movie is just a too perfect adaption of this little book.

Brokeback Mountain is the short story which inspired the pretty famous award winning movie. I haven’t seen the movie yet because I always try to read the books first and based on this read, the movie is definitely on my to watch list!
This short story follows Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist, two ranch hands that get hired to spend a summer on Brokeback Mountain tending animals with only each others company to pass the time. What starts as working camaraderie slowly becomes something more but before they know it, the summer is over and normal life returns. For Wyoming cowboys in the 60’s, normal life means getting married, having kids and forgetting all about each other. But forgetting is not as easy as they thought and as time passes, it gets even harder.
“I wish I knew how to quit you.”
Brokeback Mountain is a quick story but still takes it’s time to create these characters and the world they live in, in a way that you can’t help but be sucked into. Living the lives of poor cowboys, trying to make something of themselves, their forbidden love has no place in their future. Spanning years, we see how their secrets and shame take a toll on each of their loves and personalities.
“I goddamn hate it that you’re goin a drive away in the mornin and I’m goin back to work. But if you can’t fix it you gotta stand it….”
This tragic story deals with love, life and loss, achieving a huge amount of emotion for a short story. It is bittersweet and forces you to think about the adversity these men faced and how things could have panned out under different circumstances.
“One thing never changed: the brilliant charge of their infrequent couplings was darkened by the sense of time flying, never enough time, never enough.”
