This book from page one to the last page had me hooked. Not only was it a cute rom com but it also was such a good coming of age story and dealing with grief at a hard time as a teenager. I loved the main characters as well as all of the side characters. 10/10 recommend.

STAR RATING? TAKE ALL THE STARS. I BEG.
"She's not you." THE END OF THIS BOOK HAD ME SCREAMING OF JOY AT 10 PM. I LOVE WES AND LIZ AND THE OTHER SIDE CHARACTERS BUT THEIR RELATIONSHIP WAS SO CUTE.
OK, so there were many positive reviews for this romance. I went into it expecting light-hearted high school drama romance. I got exactly that with a predictable plot. But it was still amazing, the story kept me captivated and the characters were written beautifully with a well-placed plot.
Better Than The Movies is about 17 year old Liz who loves rom-coms and finding happily ever after. She always loved watching rom-com movies with her late mother and talking about true love. Basically, her childhood crush who she still likes moves back to her town after being gone since elementary school. Liz wants Michael to give his heart to her as she gave her heart to his since she knew what love was, especially since prom is coming up. To do this, she befriends her annoying next-door neighbour who always steals her parking spot, Wes Bennett, who is close with Michael and friends, so that Wes can give tips for Liz and try to create an idea of what Michael wants in a girl and try to project that to Liz.
But, as in every other book, she starts falling for Wes, realizing "huh, I like being around this guy because I feel like I can talk to him about anything," starts hanging out with him more, and soon enough, her entire belief of who she loves and what a happily ever after looks like changes because of Wes as they grow closer and form a romantic relationship.
There's a bit of drama near the end with Liz's best friend and Lizlying to Joss because she didn't want her to know that Wes was helping Liz pull Michael and with Michael asking her to prom, which, by the way, was unexpected so hardly and I was gonna cry because the moment Michael asks Liz and Wes turns around with Alex i'm like "NOOOO there's gonna be drama :(( )
But this romance was so adorable, cute and wholesome. There was playful tension and amazing banter. Wes shows how much he's cared for Liz since day one and it's so cute, you can see countless times Wes trying to make sure he's not trying to upset Liz. Also, the basketball scene - everyone pissed me off BUT Wes. What a sweetheart. The shopping scene when Wes is picking out a fit for Liz to wear for the basketball game andWES BUYS HER CHUCKS????
I loved how they talked about grief and how Liz can't move on from the death of her mom, always watching the rom-com DVDs, and finding stuck with her relationship with her stepmom, Helena. But the ending when they reconcile and become closer was amazing.
The movie and music references are so high school movie esque I loved it. Liz wants to live her rom-com movie so bad and she kind of got it. It's amazing, ESPECIALLY THE OFFICIAL SPOTIFY PLAYLIST. Not to miss, I promise.
This is my first impression of Lynn Painter. My favourite booktubers love her books so I was super excited to get this on my Apple Books. Now? I'm buying all the other YA romance - Betting On You, Do-Over, Nothing Like The Movies, maybe some adult romances of hers - I've heard they're very similar so I hope that there is some difference between them but I'm so excited to continue my journey with this author as Better Than The Movies is for sure a 6/5 for me. It was quite humorous, a bit foul-mouthy but still insanely cute and the Spotify playlist is NOT TO BE MISSED.
Also here's one of my favourite quotes from the book:
>> "Sometimes we get so tied up in our idea of what we think we want that we miss out on the amazingness that we could actually have. -Helena"
6/5. I love everyone, even Joss, even Kate and Cassidy, EVEN LANEY AND ASHLEY. They are all such good characters, and I love this book.
