Bloody damn, what an amazing book. Futuristic sci-fi meets barbaric Hunger Games.

Wow... I had zero expectations and this book was amazing. Now I want to read the whole series.

Look. The world building was sparse. The description lacking. The narration questionable at times (the first person narration didn’t feel like a deliberate choice by a skilled writer, and it pulled me out of the story several times). However, despite my many gripes with the writing of this book, I had an absolute blast. The fast pacing, short sentences and plot-packed pages meant I simply couldn’t put it down. I also think the writing improved somewhat in the second half of the book - I’m excited to pick up the next one.

If Pierce had written a fantasy novel and not a sci fi novel, this would have been perfect. I’m not a science nerd but I also know that the mars science is just not there. And I think that’s okay, there’s a suspension of belief that works because our main character’s family’s family has been enslaved for longer than we can imagine. BUT having just come off a nonfiction book about how unlikely it is to even get one person to mars. I simply cannot imagine sendings “mining colonies” and then literally terraforming mars without them knowing. I digress. This book is fun as fuck and gave hunger games but with craftier game masters, smarter contestants, and Darrow is a character you hate to love. He’s kind of annoying in all the right ways, lovable in all of the other ways and I can’t be helped with an enemy x lovers storyline to boot.

Pierces writing is a little shoddy for the first half of the book but then it takes off and when you get it you get it. It’s worth it.
