OOooooookay. So. I had to read this as an assignment in elementary school (I'm 40 now). For some reason, one of the lines of dialogue glued to my brain and a few times a year since then it would just pop in my head for no reason. I was walking by a Little Free Library in my neighborhood and saw this, and decided to page through to see if I had completely made the line up (I didn't). My partner and I ended up reading it and YIKES. I remembered enough to be cringing almost before we started but yes this is a racist book. (I know it was written "in a different time" and that perhaps you think the POINT is that Phillip is racist.) Please read Jamila's review. And the comments, where I learned schools are STILL assigning this. I know a lot of white people probably have nostalgia for this book. But it's 2020 and there are far better and more inclusive books to have kids read. My heart aches for the Black kids who have to read this for school. If it's a wilderness quest you need for a class, how about something like Zahrah, the Windseeker?

In short, fork the so-called canon.

I'm fairly certain it was elementary school when I read this - can't remember anything about it though.

4.5 ⭐️ I loved this book. Liam read it for seminar and really liked it, too.

It's a perfect book for young adolescents, with messages about being kind, helping others and seeing beyond differences of race and class.

I feel a little guilty for not liking it more. Strong message and a potentially powerful story, but it was boring to me.
