Sometimes when I am at a bookstore, I will just buy a book based on the cover. I saw this several times at Skylight and something compelled me to buy it. Usually this works out, but in the case of "The Rachel Papers" it was a big miss.

The book was dull and tedious. I felt like it tried to utilize value, loads of graphic sex...but it just came across as boring. One thing about the story, is it was very atmospheric. I did not know that it was written in the 1970's, until finishing the book, but the entire way through it felt like something that was from another era, rather than something current that was written about the 70's. It also felt like it would lend itself well to being made into an indy film.

I hate to say how much I enjoyed this book. Still not sure if I'm allowed to say that out loud?

Hmm...I actually liked the principal character, Charles, in the beginning, but by the end of the book I was thinking, "typical...boys!" Boys will always be boys, I guess.

It's humourous, I GUESS, if you're prepared to laugh at everything that goes along with being 20. But it's sort of a cruel dig at how seriously a 20 year old takes his own self. It's twisted and crude, but if that's how you like it..hmm...oh yeah, and Charles turns out to be a selfish, shallow, hollow excuse for a human being. Yeah, he's just being his age, but I do agree with the poster who said he shouldn't have got the girl!

Just couldn’t get into it. Felt a little disjointed, hard to follow stream of consciousness.

Starts of slowly, gets really good, and then the last 1/4 of the book, every character becomes immensely unlikeable to the point of almost wanting to throw the book aside in disgust...you just keep reading hoping for some redemption that never comes.

Terrible. Charles was the worst and did not once display any redeeming qualities, which means of course he got the girl and Oxford. There were also several - SEVERAL - passages of unnecessary details regarding his phlegm. Perhaps it was meant to be clever.
