I'll say this for sure about TFGSG - I was never bored. However, I was often extremely confused. As always, I will start off with positives. I thought that the pacing of the book was sharp and there was always something going on. This book did not let me breathe. The whole thing was messy and chaotic, dark and sometimes funny in a quintessentially Grady Hendrix way. I thought every "final girl" in the group was a strong addition to the story and I think Heather and Dani were my favorites. A really nice touch were the newspaper and media clippings throughout the book that helped tell the story and also provided meaningful commentary to the phenomenon surrounding these "final girls."

My gripes aren't really that big. Really, the main one is that Lynette can be so maddening to read at times. She is so traumatized that living in her head was sometimes suffocating and insufferable. I had some issues with her as a character too, but that didn't necessarily affect my enjoyment of the book because my enjoyment does not usually hinge on a protagonist being likable. Something that was hard for me throughout the book was keeping track of every girl's story. I wrote down what I could, but some girls in the group got lost in the shuffle. I cannot definitively tell you what Heather's backstory is as a result of this. Just a LOT going on.

Here is the thing: this book was so scary. Like so scary that I almost had to stop reading it because I was making myself nervous. But I also couldn’t tear myself away. There were quite a few surprises and so much going on. I loved the unreliability of Lynne as the narrator and how complicated she was. But I felt like parts of it were just a little brutal to me. I’ve always loved the scream queens/final girls trope and this really pushes that to the edge in a way that is almost campy. Someone make this into a movie immediately.

I’m not sure this was as successful as it could have been, but it was quite a ride. Ironically, it would make a great movie.

If you read Sager's Final Girls and was wildly disappointed like I was, this is the perfect balm. The plot moves, the characters are dynamic and sympathetic, and the story is wonderfully steeped in horror tropes. It plays with the genre and critiques it while also maintaining a wonderful respect for it.

Points deducted for
killing the black character first, a horror trope that this book sadly does not subvert
.

I really enjoyed this book. The pace varied but I often found myself not wanting to put it down and reading far more than I intended. I haven’t really been reading much recently but I got through this book in 4 days.
The only gripe I have is that I personally realised the perpetrator very early on. It was also a little confusing to try and work out which last girl some of the additional information was about between chapters but that could have been intentional. All in all a very solid read and I’d definitely recommend… but only if you have a strong stomach because it’s DARK. No graphic sexual violence but there is a lot of very gory moments. Particularly in the flashbacks.

I really hesitated on my rating. 4,75 or 5... I finally decided to give it 5 stars because the book really caught my breath. I was hesitating whether to give it 4,75 stars only because of the beginning. I found it kinda slow, but at the same time, I was in a semi-reading slump soooo I decided it didn't count.
I really liked how the characters were already experienced in the matter. They were already finals girls. They knew how it worked, how to react, how to take decisions. I also liked to follow Lynne throughout her decisions whether it was bad or not. I didn't alway follow her in her way of thinking, but I still continue to follow her in her story without asking any questions. I wasn't disappointed.
Also, the way things were described... Yes. Short, simple sentences. Right of the goal. Description of the violence, not scared of using crude words... It can't be difficult for some, but, personally, I really liked that. It had more impact in my opinion.
