Part of my love for this book comes from the fact that I picked it up from a free library entirely on a whim and really did not anticipate connecting with it the way I did. It’s cliche to say but this really is a meditation on grief and on the complex relationships we have with our parents. I ended up deeply enjoying how sparse and clear the writing was. It’s not usually a style I find myself drawn to but here I found it truly felt like the voice of someone numb and detached from the situation they find themselves in. I can understand why someone might not connect with it, but I felt understood Lorenzo very deeply even as he tried to keep me at arms length.
Moderate: Fatphobia
