A very viscerally gross book but also one with heart? But very gross.

I'm a big fan of the Dungeon Crawler Carl series so I wanted to see what else Dinniman wrote. I'm so glad I started with DCC as this book is seriously lacking in anything that initially drew me to him. The characters are flat, the action feels confusing, the mystery is...dumb? Even the litRPG elements are awkwardly placed. He does sidestep the cringey elements I have with "What if video games but real" premise by not having the MC a willing participant.
I like the idea of giant kaiju lumbering into battle with an (undead) healer hanging off the side trying to patch up injuries. The premise feels too good to be wasted as the backdrop of a video game and not the focal point of a real story in itself.
The horror elements are fine. I'm not super into gore and it felt edgey for its own sake.
I'm shocked that that KBS and DCC are published only a year apart. Dinniman really ironed out the faults in his writing in a shockingly short amount of time.

Finished up Kaiju: Battle Surgeon and yea that was an experience. Its not for the faint of heart and I honestly was shocked by the ending. If you can deal with graphic and gory nature of the story I highly recommend it if you like litrpg. Matt Dinniman continues to be an outstanding author, but his craziness really shines through in this one.
