Ich gebe offen und ehrlich zu, dass ich skeptisch war. Ja, ich habe die Nase gerümpft, als es hiess Funke würde eine Fortsetzung zu "Drachenreiter" schreiben. Ein weiteres Buch, das durch eine dahingeschmierte Fortsetzung kaputt gemacht wird. Das war mein Gedanke. Aber neugierig war ich natürlich trotzdem. Also habe ich mir das Buch aus der Bibliothek geholt.

Aber es ist wohl so, dass wenn Cornelia Funke sich hinsetzt um etwas zu schreiben, dieses Etwas gut wird. Egal, worum es sich handelt. Denn auch dieses Buch ist ein Wunderwerk und steht seinem Vorgänger in nichts nach! Wie konnte ich nur so zweifeln?

Es gibt ein Wiedersehen mit vielen alten Bekannten und was ist schöner, als nach langer Zeit wieder auf seine Freunde zu treffen? Dazu kommen natürlich auch viele neue Figuren, die man ebenso ins Herz schliesst, wie Ben und Co. Funke hat eine unglaubliche Fantasie und erzählt uns ihre Geschichte in gewohnt spannender und packender Manier.

Obwohl es sich um ein Kinderbuch handelt, fieberte ich von Anfang an mit. Schaffen es Ben und Barnabas, die Feder aufzutreiben? Die Zeit wird knapp! Und so hibbelte ich mit, von Seite eins bis zum Schluss. Ich war mittendrin im Geschehen, konnte den Urwald spüren und das Fell der Affen berühren. Das ist Funkes Talent. Erzählen, berichten uns in andere Welten schicken, auf dass wir gar nie mehr nach Hause wollen.

Dazu passend hat die Autorin selbst wunderschöne Zeichnungen angefertigt, die den Leser durch dieses Abenteuer begleiten. Da frage ich mich wirklich, ob es etwas gibt, das Cornelia Funke nicht kann. Diese Frau ist einfach unglaublich begabt! Ja, ich ergehe mich gerade in Lobhuldigungen, aber die hat Frau Funke sich redlich verdient!

The overall story was good. But the translation wasn't very good. Sentences were often needlessly difficult understand. There was no smooth flow to the writing. I blame all of this on the translator and editor. I really hope they revise the English translation

This story takes place two years after The Dragon Rider and we find Ben and company on a quest to find a gryphon's feather in order to save the about to be born pegasi that need it in order to hatch from their eggs (yes, they hatch from eggs). I truly like how Cornelia easily brings in these unbelievable situations to life with her mastery of worldbuilding.
This new story stays very true with the fantastical part, I would say that it expands into it from the first book and moves away from the personal of the first story (saving the dragon, who is my friend) into a broader need of helping for the well being of others in general (saving the pegasi because I can help). Just as in the first story, the end is achievable thanks to Ben & Co. working as a group instead of a one person effort.
In general, I really like how this story feels whole and yet it brings so many new characters that it leaves you wondering about what kind of future adventures our dragon knight might have yet to come.

Unfortunately this book didn't quite capture the magic of Dragon Rider for me. I felt that there was too much of an ~agenda~ here, and not enough story.
