Beautifully written and fascinating — thoughtful and articulate essays on life, jobs, and relationships in a part of America where those all work very differently from where I grew up. It's valuable to get that perspective.
If you spent your childhood hiding under a bed trembling in fear of nuclear armageddon, stole your Dad's flannel shirt, would rather work a crappy job than commit the unforgivable sin of "selling out," or met a guy at an express checkout line, this collection is for you. Remember when we all just used to hang out? Huber does. She's your 90s BFF, reliving our times spent in Chicagoland and other cornfields. As Huber puts it, "You say secret things to corn." And you'll enjoy trading secrets with Huber.

I got this book to learn more about the Midwest, as an immigrant who has called this place one of my homes for almost a decade. I got that and more. I appreciated how the author wove multiple intersections into their writing- it gave me hope to learn more about the movements in the 80s and how they mimic what is going on right now. Sonya has a way with words and every piece in this book is punctuated with sooo much emotion and yearning. It was a joyous way to learn more about the “sleepy Midwest”, not so sleepy after all.

These essays capture a lot of complex emotions about the Midwest and all its associated emotions; love growing from loss and decay, shame and pride melting together, making do and making better. Beautiful writing - some essays feel as though the author ripped them from her chest and presented them to the reader, still bloody. Some give you no choice but to laugh with the pain.
