Little Girl Lost: A gripping thriller that will have you hooked by Carol Wyer

Take the five, and even four, star reviews with a grain of salt, given how many of them start with the same language or include the same lines...while it could be described as "gripping", it was more that there were so many characters and so many arcs that it was difficult to keep track; six months later and I remember little at all. It's definitely not something to escape into, or to put down and go back to, even a day later.

Little Girl Lost by Carol Wyer is the first book in the DI Robyn Carter series. Robyn Carter has been on compassionate leave from the Staffordshire police since the death of her fiancé which resulted in Robyn suffering a miscarriage. To keep busy until she is ready to return to her job, Robyn has been working with cousin, Ross Cunningham at his private detective firm. Ross needs Robyn to handle their latest case of the missing hubby. Mary Matthews (who is twenty years older than her husband) is looking for her husband, Lucas. He disappeared two weeks ago, and Mary has not heard from him since then. Lucas had told Mary that he was going to Thailand, but then she discovered his passport. Mary does not want to involve the police because of photos she discovered on her husband’s computer in a folder labeled “Sugar and Spice”(I am sure you can guess what type of photos are in this file). As Robyn finds out more about the victim, she discovers that there is something far more sinister going on. Robyn takes the case to her supervisor at the Staffordshire police, DCI Louisa Mulholland. Robyn returns to her job as detective inspector and dives into the case. The clues lead Robyn to a serial killer who is intent on getting revenge for a childhood atrocity. Will Robyn be able to stop this killer before she takes her final victim?

Little Girl Lost is a good mystery novel. The book contains good writing, and I was immediately drawn into the story. The mystery is a convoluted (which I like), but it can be hard to keep track of all the various details. The mystery is twisty and the reader can easily jump to the wrong conclusion. If you pay very close attention, you will be able to solve the mystery before the author reveals the solution. There are some slow sections (such as when Robyn is exercising and the readers are given too much detail), but overall the book has a good pace. Little Girl Lost is told from three viewpoints: Robyn, Abigail, and Alice. Robyn and Abigail’s parts are in the third person and Alice’s story is told in the first person. We get to find out what happened to Alice and how her story connects to Robyn’s investigation. I give Little Girl Lost 4.25 out of 5 stars (I liked it). I was not fond of Robyn in the beginning, but she grew on me. Robyn’s story is slowly revealed to the reader over the course of the novel. The DI Robyn Carter series has the potential (with a little fine tuning) to be as good as the D.I. Helen Grace and the Detective Kim Stone series (by M.J. Arlidge and Angela Marsons respectively).

Detective Robyn Carter is returning to work after a leave following the death of her husband and unborn child. During her break she was working as a PI for her cousin looking for a teacher named Lucas who was reported missing by his wife. Meanwhile Abigail Thorne is happily married mother to a baby girl but she has secrets which might threaten her marriage .

Little Girl Lost by Carol Wyer is a start of a new psychological thriller series.Alternating between Alice’s flashback from the past and present along with Robyn's story , the book does do justice to all the characters. A little slow in the middle the book does pick up pace later and keeps you guessing till the end .

I would like to thank Bookouture & NetGalley for providing an ARC of this book in exchange for my honest and fair review.

It had many moving pieces, some good and some bad. It came together in the end, FINALLY. Many slow parts and moments/descriptions we didn’t need.

Robyn is back on the job, working a missing person case that turns into a murder case which turns into a serial killer. Another perspective Abigail is getting threatening messages and disturbing things are happening. She feels like she is losing her mind.

Zero spice. Dark. Triggering parts.

The minute I was half way through this book, I was anxious to write my review. This novel was absolutely brilliant. If you are a fan of M.J. Arlidge, I definitely suggest this novel for you. Even though it was very different, for me it still had a lot of connections in the way it was written. I received this read on NetGalley from Bookouture Publishing and I am so pleased to finally get this review out there.

This novel starts off following another female Detective Inspector named Robyn Carter. She has just previously returned to the force after a tragic loss in her life. Her first case back on the force is a missing persons case. The man’s name is Lucas Matthew’s and his wife reported him missing. As Robyn starts looking into the wife’s claims and making her way through the investigation Lucas’ father, Paul Matthews has been murdered. As Robyn begins to think both men are connected somehow, she can’t figure out how. While she is in the middle of the investigation, Paul Matthews’ house cleaner and Mary Matthews’ (Lucas’ wife) end up dead. The only thing Robyn has to go on is that a mother and wife named Abigail Thorne is somehow connected to every person.

I loved everything about this book. I will be honest though, I was a little confused at the beginning of the novel and it took me a few chapters to finally put it all together. Inside the novel you read chapters told from a few different points of view but the main ones you need to remember are Alice, DI Robyn Carter and Abigail. They are the three most important characters that will leave you breathless come the last chapter.

Little Girl Lost has just the right amount of thrilling twists and turns that it deserved. There was enough to keep me on the edge of my seat and more than enough to keep my heart racing in fear of something bad happening at the end. The minute I thought I had the killer figured out, the book proved me wrong. It wasn’t until about 70% of the way through the book when I realized who the culprit was but did not know in any fashion how the situation would end up.

After finishing up the book, I was pretty bummed that it was over. It was such a great gripping read that I didn’t want it to end. I definitely wouldn’t mind if Carol Wyer wrote more and made it a DI Robyn Carter series!

Thank you to Bookouture Publishing for providing me a copy via NetGalley. It was a great pleasure to provide an honest review.

La mia recensione ---> https://ilibridiclaudia.blogspot.com/2019/12/recensione-la-bambina-perduta-di-carol.html

Thank you to Carol E. Wyer, Bookouture and Netgalley for providing a copy of this book in return for an honest review.

A perfect family hiding disturbing secrets. A killer who wants the truth to be told.

A teacher goes missing under suspicious circumstances.
A millionaire is murdered at a local reservoir.
For Detective Robyn Carter, there’s no obvious link between the men. But as she starts to delve into the cases, her investigations lead her to Abigail, perfect wife and mother to beautiful little Izzy. What was Abigail’s connection to the victims? And why is she receiving threatening messages from an anonymous number?

But as Robyn starts to inch closer to finding the killer, Izzy is abducted.

Unless Robyn gets to the twisted individual in time, a little girl will die …

This was my first book by Carol E Wyer and it was a pretty good read. The story is told in a then and now format and from the POV of Alice, Robin and Abigail. There are lots of twists and turns, with several suspects who all seem to be hiding something. But how do the three characters connect?

I enjoyed this novel and while it became obvious who the killer was, it was still an engaging read and had a certain edge to it which I liked. Little Girl Lost is a good start to this series and I have no hesitation in recommending it as a good read. I look forward to the next installment - Secrets of the Dead - which was released at the end of May 2017. It has moved up my reading list!
