5 stars are not enough for a book so far ahead of all the other thrillers being written today, it's off the charts. Beautifully written, complicated, perfectly fleshed-out characters, a tense, nail-biting narrative from start to end. I cannot say enough about how fantastic this book is. I read this on audio, which I highly encourage, as the narrator is so spectacular! If you are a fan of Criminal Minds, this book is definitely for you. Or if you want a gorgeous story about the real life race issues in the American South today from an author with the voice to tell it right, you need to read this book!

This book needs a SERIOUS trigger warning for child murder, child sexual assault, and violence. I read this because it was on Obama’s list of books from 2023. The story was excellent! Don’t get me wrong. Titus is a likable character who just wants to be a good sheriff and he is! The topics in this story are just so serious. I don’t think I would have read it if I had known. Reading through it though it was good and i loved figuring out who the killer was! Definitely a good story just very heavy.

A compelling story from the perspective of a Black Southern sheriff combatting engrained historical racism and a serial killer case in tandem. I have loved all of S.A. Cosby’s books so far, and this one felt a little darker and harder particularly because of the serial killer’s

abuse of children and the extremely violent methods of murdering some of his associates.

The ending felt a bit rushed to me, but overall a very insightful neo-noir crime novel that I would recommend to anyone who loves this genre.
