I don’t read a lot of non-fiction but I spotted this in my library’s Holocaust and Genocide display. Not only is this book non-fiction. It is unusual in that it’s also a graphic novel. It is a powerful and heartbreaking graphic novel, being told via illustrations does not make this subject any lighter. This story is about the author’s family and their life in Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge takeover. Tian was born just 3 days after their takeover so to tell this story he interviewed his parents and relatives about their experiences. He does a stunning job illustrating this tragedy. I highly recommend picking this up but be aware this depicts a genocide.

Given todays world, I was encouraged that my library had this display up front by the entrance. I beg you to go to your library, expand your knowledge, learn more about our world and the tragedies held in our history. But then also learn from that history. I used to wonder how people could stand by when the Holocaust happened. But given the state of the world today I am less surprised. Instead I ask expand your knowledge, do research, read, and work towards change and a better world.

I saw the show Cambodian Rock Band, which also spoke about the horrors the Khmer Rouge inflicted on the people of Cambodia. It is so shocking and heartbreaking that these events really happened, and it makes me wonder about humane ways to implement communist ideology. My only critique is that there wasn’t much clarity about how much time passed between chapters.

This book really snuck up on me—I was completely unprepared for how much this graphic novel moved me. (And it’s so captivating—I read it in a single sitting)!

Year of the Rabbit tells the true story of a family’s struggle after the takeover of Khmer Rouge in Cambodia.

I think the reason I was so surprised by the power of this story is because I tend to think of myself as who’s more affected by words than images, but Veasna’s illustrations narrate his family’s story so well.

I love the way Veasna begins each chapter with a full-page visual that explains the daily lives of the Khmer people.

I learned so much about the Khmer people from reading Year of the Rabbit, so I’m hoping this will be the start of me reading more books by Asian authors who are underrepresented within the API community.
