Peak Abercombie. No fluff all killer no filler. Just an epic three day king of the hill battle, you love and are invested in charcters on both sides of the conflict and are elated and heartbroken with every swing of the sword.

Builds upon everything from the OG trilogy, expands The world and gives development to characters you never thought would get more than a glance. How he makes you love characters that you're supposed to hate is nothing less than a miracle, this man is peerless.

This was an interesting one. It was brilliant in conveying the indifference of war and of those who wage it, but as a narrative it wasn't as compelling as Abercrombie's other work.

The idea behind this book will always intrigue me. The story is mostly forgettable, which I would think was intentional and part of the brilliance of this one (what, really, is the point of most war?). Yet, I came to read a grimdark fantasy novel and I got what could be argued as a philosophical text. Not necessarily bad in itself, but those looking for a fantasy adventure might look elsewhere.

Great stuff as expected by now. Only complaint is the amount of characters was a bit confusing for me but that's more of a new problem.

"People love heroes, but new ones can always be found. With one finger of one hand I make you. With one finger of one hand I can unmake you."

I am shocked. Shocked I tell you that I have read yet another fantastic book by Joe Abercrombie.

There was a big gap between when libby took away my loan and when I got off the waitlist for it again, so I read the first half of the book twice and I'm glad I did so. My second reading of the first half was a lot more immersed, and I think if I hadn't done so, I would've possibly come to a different conclusion about this book as a whole.

I think one of my favorite parts of this series is that the stories are intertwined but not in a forced way. The author drops easter eggs here and there and some of them are so subtle that if you blink you'll miss em.

I have owned Red Country for several years now, so I expect to read it sooner than later.

this book is MUCH better than bsc but I enjoyed reading bsc more only because I loved the poisoning scenes and reading about battles tends to bore me.

- way too many characters were introduced. I have a terrible memory
- none of the povs were bad but felt like some scenes/povs could've been cut.. tunny obv and beck's pov was good but not particularly intriguing
- im not a combat person unless I'm invested in a character and even then I get bored
- the first half of the book was slow but it also needed to be because there were so many new characters

+ I like black dow whereas in the trilogy he just seemed kind of dumb and annoying
+ love Calder/skale/their relationship. I teared up at the end. gorst and finree also made great povs
+ loved the book as soon as they stopped fighting and started negotiations

tldr; most of the book is a 3 but the last 150ish pages is a 5
