This is probably my favorite Abercrombie novel, and it's kind of strange that I've now read eight of them, considering I don't think any of them are that great.
Anyrate, despite the previous sentence, I do think this one is pretty great. It has all of Abercrombie's strengths--strong, vivid characters, exciting action sequences, funny dialogue--and none of his weaknesses, which tend to be more related to philosophical perspectives. But this is a fantastic novel. And I like it more with every hour that goes by since I finished it.
It's a war novel, but much of the novel is focused on the dramas and personalities of the people who populate a war. Unlike the trilogy, this novel never gives a POV to the leaders. We see the war from the perspectives of soldiers and so on. Basically anyone besides the generals or even commanders. It has some great action setpieces and handles the absurdity and inanity of war extremely well. Bayaz' role in the affair is, ultimately, less interesting to me than everything else, but it doesn't take away from all the great relationships, characterization, and setpieces that surround it.
But, yes, really enjoyed this one, and I'll be moving right into Red Country.

Over three days of battle the fate of the North will be decided. But with both sides riddled by intrigue, follies, fueds and petty jealousies, it is unlikely to be the noblest hearts, or even the strongest arms that prevail..
Three men. One battle. No heroes.
Action packed novel full of brutality, black humour & razor sharp characterisation.
I loved every page. Absolutely Fantastic work as per usual by Joe Abercrombie. I'm now looking forward to continuing my journey through the world of the First Law with Red Country.

As good as the original trilogy. A little over the top when it comes to characters cursing in creative ways, distracting from the plot at times.
