The Heroes is a war story centered on a single drawn-out battle, but Abercrombie makes it much more. Familiar faces return, new ones stand out, and the whole thing feels both epic and personal.
The book is full of twists plans fail, loyalties shift, and no one comes out clean. Abercrombie’s strength is how he makes you both hate and root for the same characters. By now I expect flawed antiheroes, but here he pushes it further: you may actively dislike someone yet still want them to succeed.
It’s heavy, grim, and unflinching, but also sharp, darkly funny, and impossible to put down. The Heroes shows war as chaos and people as messy, with no easy victories just unforgettable storytelling.

What's a hero? What makes someone a hero? What does it mean to be a hero?
Even though The Heroes in this book refers to a hill where a battle between Northern people and South Union took place. The question about "being a hero" lingered around the characters's mind.
A war is more than just lining up soldiers and have enough skills to defeat your enemy. It has politics, intrigues and everything hidden in the soldier's camp. For a fantasy war fiction. This one is definitely a love. The characters are all impressive (I took one star because not enough Craw), realistic and not in the least bit annoying. Fingree was impressive in her own womanly way, though her husband is pretty dim and a tad too idealistic for a war period. The war was fleshed out nicely, including the chaos inside one's head. The ending was a bit predictable. But I like the ending, appropriate enough... if I may say.

Impresionante.
