I went in expecting a story similar to Room, but I was pleasantly surprised. This book is fast-paced, well-told, with both likeable and unlikeable main characters, which adds to the realism of this story. I probably have whiplash from all the plot twists and sudden revelations -- but this isn't a bad thing! I probably shouldn't have trusted all three (unreliable) narrators as intensely as I did. Some parts were confusing and I was fell for the red herrings and pinned the acts on the wrong characters at multiple points. I didn't know who the 'villain' was until the reveal, and the ending was satisfyingly realistic.

Omggg 😱 Spannend, verstörend und nervenaufreibend bis zum Schluss!!!
Dieser Thriller hat mich von Beginn an in Atem gehalten, denn durch den raffinierten Schreibstil wusste man stets nur die halbe Wahrheit oder glaubte sogar einem Konstrukt aus Illusionen. Auch die wechselnden Erzählperspektiven sorgen dafür, dass die Handlung noch eindrücklicher wird. Vor allem die Kapitel aus Hannahs Perspektive haben mich total mitgerissen. Sie zeigt, welchen massiven Einfluss die Art unserer Sozialisation von Geburt an auf uns hat, denn für Hannah verkörpert das Leben in der verriegelten Hütte die Normalität. Es ist für sie unbegreiflich, dass das Krankenhauspersonal, die Polizei oder ihr Großvater diesen Ort als Gefängnis bezeichnen, denn für das Mädchen war die Hütte ein geborgener Platz. Auch die Tatsache, dass bei Hannah zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt im Buch eine Form des Autismus diagnostiziert wird, fand ich sehr interessant. Über jene Entwicklungsstörung weiß ich leider viel zu wenig, doch das Erlebte durch Hannahs „Brille“ zu sehen ist sehr hilfreich, sich in Betroffene besser hineinversetzen zu können.

Propulsive and engaging. The book is cleverly set after the protagonist flees from confinement, and while readers eventually become privy to her time in captivity doled out in bits and pieces, it is very interesting how everything unfolds during the aftermath. All three perspectives offer a unique take on the events, and Hausmann deftly plays with the unreliable narrator trope.
