A psychological thriller about a women held captive in the woods with her two children until she escapes.
A twisty turny rollercoaster ride through a nightmarish tunnel that I may not ever recover from. A powerhouse of a book..

I didn't know this was a book till halfway through the tv series. I think if I'd read the book first I would have liked it more. Which I know is unfair, but (Tamra voice), IT'S MY OPINION. Hannah felt less dimensional to me here, and Matthias was very unlikeable. I did like the way that Papa's identity was kept secret here, more than in the book. And I did like how Kirsten came into the story here. Also Jasmin's character was more simply presented here, whereas in the tv series I had some whiplash with her. All in all not bad, but not my fave.

This book promised to be _Room_ meets _Gone Girl_. The comparison to Gone Girl was definitely a reach, but I couldn't help from making constant comparisons to Room. Where it outshines Room is with its child narrator. The narrator in Room had a baby talking inner voice that irritates, while Hannah, the sometimes narrator of Dear Child converses at least like a stilted adult.
The book also promised twists and turns, many of which were either obvious from the outset, quickly explained by the next rotating narrator, or just didn't inspire feeling.
The book was a very quick read, but it felt like a waste of time that kept me from reading something of better merit. I wish I had passed.
