The middle 2/3rds of this book were miserable.
SpoilerKolis basically violates her at points, and he in general is unpleasant to be around to the point I wanted to DNF multiple times, and ended up skimming it to avoid Kolis.

This book is overwritten, and I barely remember anything that happened.

Spoiler Ash/Nyktos and Kolis fight, Ash is incapacitated, Kolis thinks that Sera is his dead girlfriend instead of just kinda having her soul but also Sera's own too, that for 350 pages, Sera wants a Thing (the Star) to suck out the dead woman's soul, Kolis is suspicious, Ash wakes up, they talk a lot, they get dead woman's soul out, Sera ascends, they have sex, Ash loves her because they're heartmates and share a soul, the end.

That's it. It could've been <200 pages, but it's over double that.

Another great book to this series. Oh Ash, this one really tore my heart apart for him. Sera as well. She goes through so much! This one is an emotional roller coaster. I was crying hysterically at 1am, trying not to wake my family from this book.

This Intense Fantasy Romance is Book 3 in the Flesh and Fire series. This series is related the blood and ash series. While they do not have to be read together, the books will be much more enjoyable being read together with that series.
The romance in this book is an already established relationship. Due to the circumstances the MCs find themselves in there is a lot of heartache, and longing.
The book does have spice.  Although the spice doesnt pick up until closer to the end of the book.
The book moves at a steady pace following the FMC as she is captured by her enemy. She is troubled, and must find a way out as soon as possible, as her mortality clock is ticking.
The characters are wonderful. Even though we get to know the villain much better it still remains hard to not dislike him. The MCs are amazing, and their love story is epic.
The world building is complex, and becomes even more so with the new information given to us from this story.

2.5 stars
the first two books in the series were 5 stars for me but this one just gave me anxiety.
i don’t want to read about characters getting assaulted and being anxious that the main character will be too??
i understand that the author wanted to paint the picture of what happened in kolis’ court but half of the book was just uncomfortable and slow to read
& made me nauseas
& all the insults in the entire series is giving middle school/millennial cringe and takes me out of the book
& half the book was dragged out for no reason?? halfway through and the plot has hardly moved except for the multiple instances/references to sexual assault???

ok rounded up to a 3 stars for the second half of the book but i couldn’t stomach the first half and also bc the characters keep turning into cats and it’s throwing me off
& i wished that we got to see more of the other characters in the shadowlands at the end

not a book i would reread
