Like most space operas this story is one of great ideas, but unlike most space operas, the ideas work together well and provide and interesting backdrop and character set for the author to work with. You don't go into this expecting stunning insights into the nature of man, but you should come out of it with some vivid images and ideas and concepts.

The plot lagged a bit towards the middle, but overall it was an interesting read. Space opera at its finest. Another book I've been meaning to read since I was a kid!
This is a book filled with ideas, even one of which I would have been proud and happy with. The connections created between stories is kind of flimsy, but all is forgiven in the shower of ideas.

This Hugo award winning classic reads just as well today as it did when it was first published 25 years ago. Original and complex world building, with a multi-layered plot and unique and interesting characters, this is a classic that stands the test of time.
