I don't read many Contemporary Romance novels, as you might know, but this one truly caught my eye even if I'm not sure if I'm going to read the second volume of this duology.
❄️
Firstly, I think we don't often see enough books with disabled MCs. And this one doesn't have only one, but two MCs with disabilities. One has anxiety and OCD, while the other suffers from chronic seizures.
Sadly for me, as someone with OCD, this first volume doesn't deal much with it, but I believe the second volume is going to get a little bit more into it. However, I believe that is rather understable since the book focuses more on the gradual development of the two characters' relationship, the discovery of each other, and the deconstruction of prejudices. The character live with their disabilities but aren't their disabilities and this book show it quite well.
❄️
Furthermore, each character is absolutely wholesome and becomes even more endearing as we get to know them —even the less likeable of them that constantly learn to become a better version of themselves. The support each one give to the MCs is a real breath of fresh air and even in a non-queernormative world, the author successfully wrote the book as such as it comes out as a ray of hope for the future, rather than a depressing reality.
❄️
Obviously, the setting being about hockey and ice skating greatly helped me fall in love with the book. Sport novels have this thing that always makes my heart flutter with happiness ahah. The mood and the vibes that go with sport teams, particularly hockey team, are always so queer in my eyes, I love them!
