A lovely story about a transmasc Japanese-Chinese teen working to help his mom and plan his future, falling into like, and falling into drag. But choppy in places, but a very sweet story of queer youth in Vancouver.

I thought it was cute! Some of the wording and phrasing seemed a little off to me, but I'm wondering if that was just because it was written with a younger audience in mind. Still a solid read!

I wish this was stronger, because the idea is solid, there's just a few too many ideas for something this short and too many serious topics that aren't tackled effectively. It also took me way too long into the book to figure out if Ichiro's pronouns were correct by the narrator and respecting his identity, or if being a drag queen was going to be an expression of him wanting to be female, it wasn't really clear until his mother mistakenly called him her daughter, this isn't necessarily bad but it definitely had a few too many low points and a lot of confusion coming from the format.

Ok so I enjoyed the story and liked it as a quick read. However, it needed more. There were a lot of gaps and not a lot of descriptions of what was happening so a good chunk was left up to your imagination. It felt very much like a summary of a story rather than a full story with a deep character background. The book started off pretty good but the ending seemed very rushed. I wish the story had more focus on the drag aspect and less on the van storyline. I get it was a huge plot point but the book is also literally called Baby Drag Queen.

I do however still recommend this for anyone looking for a quick read as long as what I mention doesn’t turn you off too much.
