I get why this is a piece of seminal feminist literature.

In order to pave the way for more female authors, Woolf had to first unpack why a classic written by a woman was the exception not the norm. Her work contributed to society recognizing the sex discrepancy in literature as being a product of cultural oppression rather than a want of talent.

That being said, I did not love Woolf's writing style. This book resulted from her expanding on her essay/lectures, but I think I would have preferred the condensed academic version.

I'm not a fan of stream-of-consciousness style of writing. I felt the slow meandering to and away from the point diminished the impact of her message.

Resenha editada em 5. Abril. 2022

O título provisório era: The Open Door, a porta aberta.»

This book was written in 1928, effectively a hundred years ago, but every single part of it continues to be relevant and that is what makes reality so much more jarring. Woolfe covers most things a modern feminist would: oppression of women throughout the centuries, the opinions and brutality of men, the social and financial situation which killed women's freedom and expression, the lack of representation of women in history, the romanticised representation of women in literature, the lack of relationships between women in literature etc. This is a must read for everyone.
