The plot is all over the place, the conversations are repetitive, and the characters weird and unsympathetic. It's getting three stars instead of two because I learned something about Albanian history and culture in the 1800s.

Much of Lion's Daughter truly feels of its era (1992) and parts would be edited differently today to remove the orientalist tone. That said, Loretta Chase can write, and I loved this adventure in Albania, a place we rarely see historical romance travel!

2.5 stars.

Quite engaging; Esme is really quite sweet and funny, but I simply adored Percival.

That was very complicated and long and as I was only reading it to get to the sequel a friend recommended, it rather suffered from my impatience. Love the Albanian setting though.

Sometimes you just need melodrama, and this delivers in buckets.

This book, written in 1992, still has elements of old skool romance, things that would probably make me go "hmmmm" in a book written today. And also lots of miscommunication. But Loretta Chase is such a good writer that I thoroughly enjoyed reading it.
