A solid three star book. I loved the setting of and the synopsis drew me in immediately. Ren Ishida receives news that his siser Keiko was viciously stabbed on her way home one day. The police aren't sure who committed the crime and so Ren is determined to seek out answers for himself. He heads to Akakawa to wrap up his sister's affairs and also discover the truth about her murder. Once he arrives, he falls into similar circumstances as that of his sister: taking over her job as a teacher, living in her old bedroom, meeting her friends, etc. As he begins to uncover more about his sister's life, he realizes there was much he didn't know about his sister.

My response to this book was more of a roller coaster, rather than a cut and dry experience. At times, I couldn't put this down and other times, I was just ready for the book to be over. I found the climax of the book underwhelming. Her brother finally discovers who killed her and his response to the crime is indifferent at best, which I found odd. The writing was beautiful and there were parts that had me captivated, just the ending was not quite as satisfying as I would have liked.

I read Rainbirds because I recently finished The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida by the same author, Clarissa Goenawan. Having enjoyed her second book, I decided to read her first, (which, by the way, features the character Miwako Sumida in a cameo).

Rainbirds, in some ways like The Perfect World of Miwako Sumida, takes place in Japan, and features a deep and tender relationship between Ren and older his sister Keiko, who left their Tokyo home seven years prior to live in Akakawa. Since her departure, she has never returned home, but has maintained weekly phone calls with her brother. After graduating from the university, Ren is notified that his sister has been murdered, and he travels to Akakawa to piece together what happened to her. As he does so, Ren also discovers things about his own life and their shared past.

Rainbirds is an engrossing read with an element of suspense. The characters are interesting and complex, and the way in which Goenawan weaves them together holds the reader's interest.

Though it was advertised as a mystery...I felt like it was centered more around 7 stars rather than who did it. Then the reveal of who did it was probably the worst part of the book.

This was a good read and a nice story! Very lackluster on the conclusion of the book!

i think i expect a lot from this book. i thought this would be filled with ren finding clues and leads for her sister murder but it felt like a book about him in a city where his sister used to live, meeting people his sister used to met, and just his life with some women???

i read this in 2 days because i cant wait for this book to be over, i kept flipping the pages and thought that i actually dont care about ren at all.

and some things bothered me. when he was a student, he cant get the fact that his sister is going out with his math teacher but then??? he's getting involved with his student, nakajima.

when ren confronted nakajima's father and reveals the truth, i feel like keiko murder case is already become a side plot.

:/

A beautiful and engrossing book imbued with conflict and drama that was chased down and revealed in an appropriately subtle and satisfying way. There was never a particular spike of strong emotion that I felt while reading this book, but I don't think it needed one. Ren Ishida is a quiet and contemplative character, and I think Goenawan did a brilliant job matching that with the level of action and intrigue that was contained in the book.

I will say that I did feel mildly uncomfortable with regards to actions and thoughts hinting at the potential beginnings of an underage relationship, but I feel that the author treated those moments very well, and it ultimately was done in a tasteful and appropriate way.
