This book started ridiculously strong. Showing the horrors of the working class in the north of England in the 30s. The first part of the book gets a solid 4 or 4.5 from me. However the second half, which reads much like a newspaper article, is not great. Hence the rather middling review score.

Many of the topics Orwell covers in this book are enduringly relevant: the divergence of social class and economic class, the economic and cultural divide between North and South, the tendency of rising unemployment and economic deprivation to push the working poor into the arms of the political right, and the aesthetic problem of socialism's bearded, sandal-wearing, vegetarian, yoga-practicing proponents.

Orwell's snobbishness, racism, and sexism make much of the book seem almost comically dated, until you remember how prevalent so many of his attitudes remain today.

I did enjoy the first half of the book and about what it was like in those days in that area and of the poverty and how tough life was. In the second half of the book I got a bit bogged down about Socialism and Fascism but I did persevere and I am glad I did as I did learn a lot about class structure and what Socialism etc is about. Overall it is a good book to read.

Not at all the book I expected.
