I kept shaking my head and muttering, "He's a genius, he's a genius, he's a genius" the entire time I was reading this. Orwell has floored me. The first half of the book is, undeniably, more engaging and perhaps my favourite, but the second is thought provoking and upfront, and I enjoyed it thoroughly as well. This is my first experience of Orwell the nonfiction writer and I anticipate being a lover of these books as opposed to his fiction (which I still love because--it's Orwell but his nonfiction is too bloody good).

Interesting perspective of socialism and working class issues in the 1930s, not super engaging

Some parts frustrated me a lot but enjoyed overall.

A vital work in European socialism, documenting the reality of working class life while foreshadowing the big social changes that were going to occur after the war. It's an incredible political document but also just a fantastic piece of writing. His description of a trip down a mine is as terrifying as any horror story.
