"The way things should be and the way things are hardly ever get together. " - Hallorann

I love the film The Shining. I've rewatched it so many times. All of the actors in that movie are phenomenal.

That said-
I absolutely understand why Stephen King was not a fan

I won't do a full movie by book comparison but if you want the gist of it please watch Adam Wright's Youtube video on it titled "The Shining- Book vs Movie".

Man, this book was CRAZY. A lot of supernatural elements that made me feel like I was losing my mind. The violence was ramped way the hell up from the movie and it was better for it.

The end had me crying. The movie ending is unsettling and ambiguous wheras the book ending is bittersweet and hopeful.

I definitely recommend if you liked the movie and generally enjoy Stephen King's writing. The movie holds a very special place in my heart but I now see it as a movie INSPIRED by the book rather than BASED on the book. . This really scratched a good itch and I absolutely want to read It now, but that'll HAVE to wait until the fall. And I'll do an audiobook version to accompany the text version.

In grief and loss for the past, and terror of the future - p21

She had never even given Jack the benefit of the doubt. Not the smallest. Wendy felt her face burn yet knew with a kind of helpless finality that if the whole thing were to be played over again, she would do and think the same way. She carried part of her mother with her always, for good or bad. -p368

Tough old world, baby. If you're not bolted together tightly, you're gonna shake, rattle, and roll before you turn thirty. p378

"Well, what the hell. Either way it had been done before. Either way it was a load of shit." -p381

"In the Overlook all things had a sort of life. It was as if the whole place had been wound up with a silver key. The clock was running. The clock was running. He was that key, Danny thought sadly. Tony had warned him and he had just let things go on. -p 448

"Jesus. Jesus Christ," Queens said. There was a peculiar tight expression of concern on his face, one that Hallorann was familiar with. It was as close to an expression of sympathy as a white man who thought of himself as 'good with the coloreds' could get when the object was a black man or his mythical black son. - 466

"There's some things no six-year old boy in the world should have to be told, but the way things should be and the way things are hardly ever get together. The world's a hard place, Danny. It don't care. It don't hate you and me, but it don't love us either. Terrible things happen in the world, and they're things no one can explain. Good people die in bad, painul ways and leave the folks that love them all alone. Sometimes it seems like it's only the bad people who stay healthy and prosper. The world don't love you, but your momma does and so do I. You're a good boy. You grieve for your daddy, and when you feel you have to cry over what happened to him, you go into a closet or under your covers and cry until it's all out of you again. That's what a good son has to do. But see that you get on. That's your job in this hard world, to keep your love alive and see that you get on, no matter what. Pull your act together and just go on." -p650

Between 3.5 and 4 stars. I wanted to try King for the first time and have heard this is a good place to start. It was an engaging story and incredibly well written. While I loved the psychological aspects of the character development, the supernatural aspects lost me a little. Safe to say it’s not my preferred genre, but I’m glad I gave it a chance, especially to experience his writing.
