I finally read The Shining there’s so much more here than what the movie gives us. It takes a little over 40% of the book before the Torrances are even snowed in, which really shows how much was left out on screen. And don’t get me wrong, I actually love the movie, the casting was perfect, but I can see why King wasn’t a fan.

This was only the second book of his that I have read, and honestly it felt like such a perfect fall read. I read a mix of the physical book and audiobook, and I loved all the extra layers we get for Jack, Wendy, Danny, and even the Overlook itself. The backstory really deepens everything. That said, the book was a little long-winded, and I found myself zoning out during parts of the last 25-30% when the descriptions dragged on.

Still, the ending worked for me, and I appreciated the way it wrapped up. I’m not sure if King will ever be a go-to author for me, but I’m glad I experienced this one the way it was meant to be read.
