A deeply moving and powerful book written in a style that almost feels detached/staccato…such that the words actually hit harder. It’s based on a true story/relationship and brings humanity to the Israeli/Palestinian conflict in ways I haven’t experienced before. I was prompted to look up events I had been unaware of. Each time each of the fathers reflects on their daughters is a new gut punch. I believe this will
stick with me for a while. And I do wonder how the author would incorporate the perspectives now/post 10/7/23.

I really wanted to enjoy this more than I did, given the amazing reviews it has had. Gritty, confronting, marginally hopeful and very originally presented and told.

Really enjoyed this book but found it hard to follow at times. So many threads aside from the main two.

I’ve had this book on my shelf for years but only just got around to it and I have a deep regret that it took me so long. Beautifully written and absolutely harrowing to read. If you try it and the writing isn’t your style please stick with it.

Published in 2020, this novel about a Palestinian father and an Israeli father, each mourning a young daughter lost to war, seeking peace is extremely relevant given the current situation. It is a reminder that some conflicts are endless and peace, although not easy, is worth striving for. The book itself is experimental in approach and plotless. It also contains a wealth of information on a variety of topics, including birding, mathematics, and tightrope walking. You will learn from this book provided you read with an open mind.

I don’t know what to do with this book. I read it for book club and it’s not one id pick out on my own. I’m glad I’ve read it because I did learn a lot about Israeli/palestinian interactions. But it was a hard read in many ways—- the ornithology stuff, the mini chapters that were word salads, the roundabout approaches to the plot moving forward led to a lot of skimming
I did appreciate the character developments; the insights into what it’s like to live there, and the core message of the way it is now must change, love is the way forward and we are all more the same than we are different were deeply moving in a way that left me with a book hangover

Forse servono libri così, libri che scelgono di usare associazioni di immagini ed emozioni (e forse qualche colpo basso), intrecci di vite e dettagli da riannodare, servono libri così per raccontare certe storie più grandi di noi.
