There may not be such a thing as a perfect book, but if there were such a thing, this would be one. The sheer audacity of what McCann has crafted is stunning. Breathtaking. Beautiful.

This book is superbly crafted—moving where it means to be, challenging where it needs to be, seemingly tangential when the reader maybe needs a little break, and educating throughout. The Israeli occupation of Palestine and historical and ongoing (never-ending!) conflict is one of the things that makes me the saddest and most frustrated in the whole world. Reading this book is ALMOST a relentless onslaught of tears—I often got so sad I had to set the book down and collect myself. But there are so many moments of joy. And there is a joy and purpose to helping fathers remember the daughters lost. There is also hope throughout this book. If Ireland and South Africa can figure out their s**t, so can Israel and Palestine. This is about as neutral as a book about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict rooted in objective facts can be, and I think everyone should read this book: whether you know nothing about Palestine and Israel, know a lot, or think you know a lot. End the Occupation!

I really really loved it. I didn't want it to end.
