A great yarn, read by one of the best narrators I've listened to on Audible (Patrick Fraley) Huck Finn is a great narrator of this eventful road trip - a consistent liar who's honest about his observations, funny, engaging, struggling with some moral issues.

I never got used to hearing the "n" word, but Twain probably provided an illuminating look at slavery for his time - delivered in a very human & funny story.

Tom Sawyer is the most annoying and irritating little white boy I’ve ever read about.

Pre-listen for reading James, it’s a classic I guess…

I know this is a classic (which makes poor Mark Twain shudder), but I just flat out didn't like this book. I can see the appeal if you're a person that's into trouble and adventure, but I really had to force myself to keep reading it. When I got to the end where Tom Sawyer showed up and had to turn everything into a big deal, I just wanted to smack him. His character really grated on my nerves and proved that I have been right in not reading Tom Sawyer. I'm glad I can say I've read it, but I didn't enjoy it one bit.

James by Percival Everett was one of my favorite reads this year…and it left me wondering how much of the (pretty wild) plot points were taken from Huck Finn, so I got an audio copy of the book from the library and…yeah the plot points mostly match up. If anything Huck Finn is even more unbelievable and coincidental and crazy than James. But — I didn’t like it. I had to force myself to finish it. So many N words and, while Huck was relatively open minded/progressive compared to the slavers, the way he and Tom used Jim as a plaything, as a way to drive their madcap adventures, was hard to read. I’ll take James over this outdated ‘classic’ every time.

Well, by and by….I loved this when I read it 15 years ago, and I loved it now. Whimsical, delightful, funny, charming, nostalgic, childlike wonder with a huge dose of adventure.
