Perhaps the Texas Ranger is a bit too much of an idealized "rough" but "good" hunk of a guy. And the judge reacts to him.... But the plot had a good twist. After listening to the audio again at a later date I have to say that the audio version adds a depth to Crawford Hunt, the Texas Ranger, as well as the other characters. I recommend the audio version.

I love a good Sandra Brown. Action, love story, thrills. Holly is a judge who must determine if a Texas Ranger gets custody of his little girl, or if she must forever remain with her grandparents. Before judgments can be made a mad man starts shooting up the court room. It is up to our tall dark and handsome Ranger to not only save the day, but save a life. A great piece of Brain Candy.
I felt like this novel was just okay. There wasn't anything that was so amazing about it. The character of the ranger was decent; he was a stereotypical rough-around-the-edges kind of guy and, other than his soft spot for his daughter, that was all there seemed to be in terms of his personality. I had not known previously that the author writes romance thrillers so I was quite surprised by the romantic aspects and descriptions in the novel. They weren't good or bad.... they just ... were there. They really served no purpose other than to provide some steamy content. At least it all ended in a positive way - that was probably my favorite thing about the novel! Overall, this was a decent story but with nothing remarkable to show. If you like reading thrillers with a little bit of erotic content, then you should read this novel and check out more by this author. If you prefer hardcore action and thriller, then you should probably look elsewhere
Audio. Well narrated and the plot moved swiftly and fairly plausibly within the genre.
Leary Michaels knows how it is to struggle against the system. She grew up in poverty with a mother who would do anything to provide for and protect her family, and Leary holds those values dear. That's why she begins to work with the Knight & Payne legal firm after she passes the bar. Knight & Payne is known to fight for the underdogs and people in trouble, and they won't rule out unethical behavior if it means they'll win.
Leary has made her niche and Knight & Payne and works on a case in which an exotic dancer has breast reduction surgery and ends up deformed and now unemployed.
Reeve Holloway was blindsided when he first set eyes on Leary Michaels in the courthouse elevator. She was seductive, sensual, and gorgeous. He was also blindsided when he realized that Leary Michaels is also his opposing counsel on the medical malpractice lawsuit. Leary is prepared to use her sexuality and what the Good Lord gave her to win this case, but Reeve has talents of his own. When things get steamy in the courtroom, it's hard to keep the proper boundaries. Both attorneys are determined to win this case, which means someone is bound to lose...
This is my first time reading a book from this author, and even this series. Although it's book #8, I felt that this could easily be read as a standalone.
The plot set up is full of tension with the enemy/lover dynamic. I thought the author could have played with that a bit more. The two main characters act on their lust quite early on in the story. I think that playing with the forbidden attraction would have gripped the reader a bit more. Make them feel the yearning and struggle so that we can be more sympathetic with the characters. I felt that the story is very dependent on the sex scenes, so be aware that it's chock full of those since it starts so early in the story.
The legal side of the story was interesting. You definitely feel for the plaintiff and her situation and why she chose her profession and the surgery. However, everything was a bit predictable. The foreshadowing made the twists of the story obvious and I was able to guess the outcome fairly easily.
My final thoughts is that this book is so-so. Like I said above, I think I would have liked it more if the sexual frustration was built up and more time was spent on the plot.
