This book just does not seem to be for me. I find the atmosphere to be quite dreary, and the chapters seem to drag a bit for me. I feel like I can already tell what the twist is, and I don't know that I care to see if I'm right or not. I might have liked this more when I was 15, but presently it is just not my jam. I can see why someone else might like it though.

Loved this book! This book starts in an academic setting, and  delves into folklore and somewhat magical elements. There were a lot of gothic elements, both in the writing and in the setting. The writing was also beautiful. I did enjoy the connection between Preston and Effy, they were very sweet, somewhat contrasting with the dark setting and the themes of the story.
There were some elements I wished were different (e.g. a time-jump at the beginning of the book) and yes, there were a few holes in the plot. Hence the 4.5 stars, because I just had a good time with the setting, the characters and the writing.

This was a good read but I don't think I would recommend it to anyone. It was very well written. I will probably read Reid's other works. However, the
focus on the sexual abuse theme was very heavy. The trauma felt real.
