“Now look ‘ere” said Mr Stick, angrily, standing up....“I’ve told you I don’t want to,” said Julian. “You’re not a pleasant sight.”

Since when were the Famous Five books so dark?! A little girl getting kidnapped was definitely not on my mind when I thought about what adventure the Five would get into next.

After George's mother becomes ill and is taken to the hospital by Uncle Quentin, the Five are left under the care of the Stick Family. After the Sticks try to poison Timmy the dog, the Five devise a secret plan to run away to Kirrin Island and live there until their Uncle and Aunt return. However, upon arrival, they realise that they aren't the only ones on the island and soon discover that the Sticks are involved in a high-profile kidnapping case.

I thought it was a bit early in the series to return to Kirrin Island, but it was fun all the same, especially as the Five discover a cave that they hadn't noticed before. This book was actually pretty tense as there was kind of a lot at stake - definitely a very adventurous story.

2020 review:

the usual - reread this so i could listen to the famous five podcast with the story fresh in mind. i think julian is just absolutely hilarious in this, but listening to the podcast definitelt made me aware of class issues in this that i did not consider, namely that julian is so rude to these people and can be rude to them because they're essentially servants and are being "put in their place" (ew), but he would never be rude to mr. roland in the previous book, who is also awful to them, because mr. roland is educated and of an higher class, and that makes me like the book a lot less.

While at school, famous five was my most favourite series. I used to borrow them from the school library and read them again and again. These books were always in demand. They are still my most favourite series and they will always be.
