A Beauty & the Beast Retelling

A fun story to read and be enchanted all over again with the characters and the enchanted castle. I didn’t want to put it down.
mysterious slow-paced

Strong character development: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: No

I can't really review the book since I didn't finish it. I couldn't get through it - it didn't keep my attention.

As fairy tale retellings go, this was not nearly as good as some others I've read (including others by Robin McKinley). I didn't really feel like she changed or added that much to the story...it was more like a longer telling than a retelling. Long winded details about clothes and scenery and other trivial things seemed to be more important to the author than further developing or recreating the characters. I did like the fact that Beauty's sisters and family were loving towards her, and not mean or spiteful, and that the family actually enjoyed living in the country and their simple lives, rather than pining away for their more materialistic lifestyles--even though of course, everyone is rich at the end. For more imaginative retellings I recommend Zel or Spinners, both by Donna Jo Napoli, or Ella Enchanted by Gail Carson Levine.

I have always loved Beauty and the Beast, this version is, by far, my favorite.

While I enjoyed this book (I'm a sucker for anything Beauty and the Beast), it just didn't light any fires. It was a quick read, I liked the magic concepts, I liked Beauty's family, I liked the Beast. I just didn't *love* anything.

Flaws of characters a main focus: Complicated

Enfin une réécriture de conte que j'aime. Je suis surprise également de dire que ça reste un mix du Conte de Mme Leprince de Beaumont ainsi que du dessin animé Disney. Tout pour me plaire en fait (en particulier la bibliothèque).

This was SO fun to read again. It's definitely on the more advanced side, reading-wise, but my girls were super into it!

I have to be honest I really liked it till the last chapter. There I felt like it was a quick tie up all the loose ends and end the book, however I really loved the rest of the story.
